For all new clan members;

You are encouraged to take this mon and and use it as your avatar/profile pic, in order to communicate unity.
Naturally, if we all had the same pic, that would be very boring. So, you can change colours, add text, or whatever you want, as long as the mon is *clearly* visible.

Wear it with pride!

PostSubject: The "Art of War" Act   Thu Feb 24, 2011 12:59 pm

Hi All,

Just thought I'd share an idea with you all that I think could expand our knowledge of the game.

As you may know, the demo came with an encyclopedia (!) containing all units, buildings, abilities, clans, provinces, resources and traits.

I would like to propose that we compile the most useful of this information, and your experience as TW gamers into a mega-thread similar in layout to Sun Tzu's "The Art of War", which we can cross-reference as needed.

If you are unfamiliar with the layout of The Art of War, here it is:

Strategic Assessments
Doing Battle
Planning a Siege
Formation
Force
Emptiness and Fullness
Armed Struggle
Adaptations
Maneuvering your Armies
Terrain
Nine Grounds
Fire Attack
On the Use of Spies

I would like to propose this layout, in this order;

Strategic Assessments - introduction to unit size, fatigue, and morale
Doing Battle - basic unit types and counters (yari, bow, sword, spear, cav; as well as the differences between ashigaru and samurai)
Formation - Formations
Emptiness and Fullness - Basic Tactics
Adaptations - Using and dealing with generals
Force - Creating and responding to mass routs
Armed Struggle - Using unit abilities
Maneuvering Armies - Traversing the battlefield
Terrain/Nine Grounds - Battlefield terrain and weather
Planning A Siege - Sieges
Fire Attack - Naval Battles
On the Use of Spies - Using other specialized units and their abilities (matchlock, cannon, kisho ninja, monks, and heroes)

I think that this would be best written if one person or multiple people wrote each chapter. As well, after writing something, summarize key points in single sentences, and feel free to include quotes that you feel are relevant to your points.

What does everyone think? Any suggestions?

By all means. I suppose that is the best way to manage the task of writing this. Thanks!

Everyone can send me information relevant to their expertise as a message, and I will compile it into sections. I have already done a basic introduction to what I feel are the three main factors that a player needs to be familiar with (unit size, fatigue, and morale). If I am in need of information on a particular section, I will post a notice for it. I suppose this would be a good time to mention that I have a fair amount of experience as a writer and editor. Also, if you say a particularly wise thing in your write-up, you can expect me to include it as a separate quote for more emphasis, Sun Tzu style!

Before long, we will have the most comprehensive guide to Total War: Shogun 2 (and wouldn't that the be something, especially before launch)!

OK, So here is a little run down of the Variations of Formations given in Shogun 2 Total War. However I recommend that you try to make your own as well for being versatile is one of the greatest aspects of combat.

Spear Point - This is a Balanced Attack Formation: Used for fast assembly and basic maneuvering.

Cranes Wing - This is a Balanced Defensive Formation: Used for fast assembly, it gives the General time and protection to asses the battlefield, and flanks are well protected.

Flying Geese - This is a Cavalry Heavy Defensive Formation: This formation brings your cavalry to the front flanks surrounding most vulnerable troops as well as the General.

Reclining Dragon - This is a Infantry Heavy Attack Formation: This formation makes for a good solid middle attack force, file after file of infantry starting with light to heavy.

War of the Tiger- This is a Infantry Heavy Defensive Formation: This formation is made to blunt an attack up front, either by other infantry or from cavalry.

Bark of the Pine Tree - This is a Cavalry Heavy Attack Formation: This formation is used for "shock" tactics. Cavalry charges can devastate infantry lines with their charge as well as using the advantage of height , leverage, and spear length.

Cloud Dragon - This is a Missile Heavy Attack Formation: This formation is used to "Harass" army infantry as your army advances, with flanks protected by cavalry and infantry in support this formation can be deadly in the hands of an elite general.

Flying Bird - This is a Missile Heavy Defensive Formation: This formation just like the Cranes Wing Formation can give ample time to a general to asses the situation as an army approaches, however the general must be attentive to his Missile units in order to move them away from battle before the enemies army confronts them.

-The General Mind Set that you need to adapt in order to win ANY battle.

-----------------------------Organize------------------

3 O's

Optimal Formation: "Shuai-jan is a snake that is found in the ChUng mountains. Strike at its head, and you will be attacked by its tail; strike at its tail , an you will be attacked by its head; strike at tis middle , and you will be attacked by head and tail both."~ Sun Tzu .
[img] [/img]

Optimal Tactic: As Optimal Formation Every Strategy need to be Organized.[short of example here lol! ]

Optimal Vision: In Simple , Keep an eye on everything from the mini-map to your allies.

----------------------------------------------------------
"In battle, whom which team have more organized communication protocols have more chances in better respond to an unexpected threat with ORGANIZED"~Shogun[Dr.MightySnake]

*Trees Cripple the formation and decrease cavalry's powers
*Frozen Shallow water pass decrease cavalry's powers
*Tired troops flee quickly
*Keeping enemy units away from the main army causing them to route easily
*Timing is everything
*Take some time to check the battlefield ,for there is an ground to win , and there is an ground to loose
*use your general to keep your troop standing in the ground, and if necessary let him do some charge-and run tactic.[but keep him alive]

I have learned this after this battle :http://hondaclan.foromotion.net/t66-takeda-vs-date-2640-vs-1720-very-hard#305
